The post-Civil War Navy had a period of no progress though it still had to maintain duties protecting American soil. It was in the 1880s before the Spanish-American war that the Navy would go through a major overhaul. For the first time the United States Navy would have a battleship.

The Navy would soon find itself becoming much larger and strategically capable than ever. This would occur at the beginning of the 20th century and the start of World War I would pull the Navy into combat with a great deal of success. World War II would be the monumental change that impacts the world. After being attacked at Pearl Harbor, the Navy had overhauled fleet size and the technologies involved with ships. Jesse Losey served in the US Navy from 1995-2004
